comparing Puerto Rico to the areas the DL would like to include in a more autonomous region?? Not really such a great comparison. These areas aren't just strewn all over china, but border the TAR- the western part of Sichuan, a very small part of Yunnan, Qinghai and southern Gansu. Those were formerly known as Amdo and Kham and have mainly ethnic tibetan population. Also, I do think the DL has moved towards China, except for accepting chinese rule over Tibet he agreed to let them manage foreign policy and more if Tibet would ever be more autonomous... I like Goldsteins book especially to get a broad overview, but I do recommend the book China's Tibet Policy of the late professor Dawa Norbu.
Except for that the article is really interesting.
Cheers

Patrick French, the author of “Tibet, Tibet: A Personal History of a Lost Land” had a piece on the symbolic visits of Dalai. (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/22/opinion/22french.html?_r=3&oref=slogin&pagewanted=print)He suggested that it was a misguiding strategy that would only undermine the talks between Dalai and the authority in BJ.
